What are pre-packaged goods?

Pre-packed commodity defines a commodity which without the purchaser being present is placed in a package of whatever nature, whether sealed or not, so that the product contained therein has a pre–determined quantity.

The legal metrology deals with the units and methods of weight and measurement in relation to mandatory legal and technical requirements.

When we go for shopping, we buy goods which are either pre-packed or sold in loose. We are able to determine their quality and when we buy pre-packed commodities we cannot assure of products’ weight and freshness. The Legal Metrology Act assists the customers with the information required (weight, quantity, price, etc) to make a clear buying decision.

What Is An LMPC Certificate For Importers?

Those who import pre-packed commodities obligatorily apply to the Director of Legal Metrology in the Central government or the Controller of Legal Metrology in the state to get their name and address registered. Upon the approval of the application, the controller of Legal Metrology will issue the LMPC certificate. An LMPC registration is valid for a minimum of one year and a maximum of five years.

The Legal Metrology Act 2009 regulates the import, sale, and distribution of pre-packaged goods in India. Any product of a predetermined quantity, when packed in the absence of a buyer, is a pre-packaged product. Registration under this Act establishes a strong impression of consumer awareness and reduction of unfair trade practices pertaining to such products.
