OCI Registration Online
What is OCI ?
The Overseas Citizenship of India is a form of permanent residency available to people of
Indian origin and also for their spouses which allows them to live and work in India
indefinitely. Despite the name, OCI status is not citizenship of the country and does not
grant the right to vote in Indian elections or hold public office.
The Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card is issued to a foreign national of Indian origin.
It is an immigration status permitting them to live and work in the country indefinitely.
The OCI card was introduced in August 2005 in response to demands for dual citizenship by
the Indian diaspora who were residing in the developed countries.
It was introduced under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2005 and was launched during the
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention held in Hyderabad in 2006. It needs to be mentioned that
the constitution of India prevents the citizens of the country from holding dual
citizenship. OCI is not actual citizenship of India according to the law as it has many
limitations such as no right to vote, no right to hold constitutional offices, and no right
to buy agricultural properties.
Why OCI?
OCI card holders are ordinarily entitled to following benefits which other foreign nationals
are not entitled to:
1. Multiple entry, multi-purpose lifelong visa to visit India;
2. Exemption from reporting to Police authorities for any length of stay in India; and
3. Parity with NRIs in financial, economic and educational fields except in the acquisition
of agricultural or plantation properties.
